🧠Choosing the right memory
DDR5 or DDR4 — which do I need?
How much memory (capacity) do I need?
As a guide: 8 GB for basic office and browsing, 16 GB for mainstream gaming and multitasking, 32 GB for demanding games and creative work, and 64 GB or more for video editing, 3D, virtual machines and servers. Use the Capacity chips at the top of any collection to filter instantly.
Should I buy one module or a matched pair?
For desktops, two matched modules run in dual-channel mode and deliver noticeably more bandwidth than a single module of the same total size (for example 2×16 GB beats 1×32 GB for gaming). When in doubt, buy a matched pair.
Does memory speed (MHz) matter?
It helps, especially on AMD Ryzen and in CPU-bound games, but capacity and compatibility come first. Pick the fastest speed your motherboard officially supports, then enable XMP (Intel) or EXPO (AMD) in the BIOS. Filter by speed using the Speed chips on any collection.
🔧Compatibility and installation
How do I know a module will fit my system?
Match three things: generation (DDR3/DDR4/DDR5), form factor (DIMM for desktops, SO-DIMM for laptops and mini-PCs), and a speed your board supports. For brand-name PCs and laptops, tell us your exact model and we will confirm the right part. Our buying guide walks through it step by step.
What is the difference between DIMM and SO-DIMM?
DIMM is the full-length module used in desktop PCs and servers. SO-DIMM is the shorter module used in laptops, mini-PCs and many all-in-ones. They are not interchangeable. Shop laptop SO-DIMM memory.
What is ECC memory and do I need it?
ECC (Error-Correcting Code) memory detects and corrects rare memory errors and is used in servers and workstations where data integrity is critical. It needs a CPU and motherboard that support it. Standard desktops and gaming PCs use non-ECC memory. Browse server and ECC memory.
What are XMP and EXPO?
They are one-click BIOS profiles that run your memory at its rated speed — XMP is Intel and EXPO is AMD. Out of the box, high-speed memory often runs slower until you enable the profile in your BIOS/UEFI.
